School just isn't as exciting now that there's Indonesia to look forward to. However, the 7:30-6:00 became a bit more awesome yesterday when my co-worker inspired the creation of a new weekly holiday we've since dubbed Secret Agent Tuesdays. Here's how it works...
During school hours, my partner and I work out of the lunchroom, grabbing groups of students from the kindergarten and first grade hallway for tutoring. Before the kids head back, they are lined up against the wall and informed that something terrible has happened at the school. An evil group of ninjas/pirates/Russians has broken into the building and taken over the classrooms, making their return trips extremely dangerous. The "agents" are informed that they and only they have the incredible skills needed to sneak past the guarded classrooms undetected. As a retired naval officer, my new co-worker has the crisp salute necessary to turn any skeptical six-year-olds into believers. Imaginations won over, then, the kids proceed to silently duck, tumble, and creep past every doorway with utmost stealthiness all the while keeping two fingers tuned to their invisible earpieces.
A few teachers are still upset about the pretend-the-blue-tiles-are-the-ocean game that our little ones turned into a hallway sensation in November. However, I think Secret Agent Tuesdays has the potential to get even bigger and rile up administrators in ways previously unimagined. AmeriCorps members across the country probably dream of leaving this kind of legacy.
