Productivity Win

College is at least partially defined by the student's struggle to get work done amidst an anti-work, pro-distraction environment. For me, those struggles came in the form of two hour games of Smash Brothers 64, midnight dodgeball, constant pranking, and LOST (among other things). But get work done I did. Whether it meant going nocturnal for back-to-back all nighters or writing a term paper while weathering the Blackwell 200S Stomach Plague (70% hall casualty rate), I always managed to accomplish pressing tasks and certainly felt satisfaction in doing so.

Post-graduation life, though, has been dissatisfyingly lacking in the responsibility department. My to-do lists are headlined by activities like "buy peanut butter" and "wash clothes". And though Walmart brand Smacks cereal will likely forever be an important part of my life, trekking to the store for them just doesn't fill me with the sense of personal, administrative satisfaction I'm accustomed to.

But today I finally got my long awaited "personal responsibility" fix. On top of the regular 7:30-6:00 shift, highlights included: (1) booking a flight from Atlanta to NYC, (2) booking a separate flight from NYC to my Peace Corps staging event in San Francisco, (3)making a call to ensure lodgings in San Fran will be covered, (4) purchasing a new camera, and (5) submitting a visa/passport application to SATO travel. All in all, I definitely call today a productivity win.

And here's today's Moment of Innocence (the italics are absolutely necessary) from one of my favorite students:

Daniel: What do girls like?
Student: Girls like boys with big muscles... like this (flexes)
Daniel: Why do girls like boys with big muscles?
Student: So they can pick them up in the air.
Daniel: Why do girls like to be picked up in the air?
Student: Cause they be lazy and don't want to walk.
