Cooking with Indos: An Illustrated Guide to Rujak Pedas

  1. Find some unripe, still sour-tasting mangoes. Your front yard may be a good place to start.
  2. Find a stick about twenty feet in length. Bamboo will do.Then, whack those mangoes until they hit the ground. If the mangoes are suitably unripe, they won't bruise from the fall.
  3. Peel the mangoes, cut them into slices, and then dip them liberally into a sweet and spicy sauce made from chili peppers and Indonesian ketchup.
  4. Eat with your right hand, toss away overeager ducks with your left.
  5. Use elbows to jockey for better position among friends in family.
  6. Let the ducks have at the leftovers, and try not to draw discouraging, existential conclusions between the ducks' eating habits and your own.
